A full ice bin at noon doesn’t tell you whether it will last through two evening functions. The first event may use the stored ice faster than the machine can replace it, leaving the second event short even when the machine’s daily production looks adequate.
For back-to-back service, commercial ice bin sizing needs a time-based check. Separate the ice you can store before the rush from the ice the machine can produce while that rush is happening.
Work through the busiest three hours
Write down expected ice withdrawals for drinks, food displays, ice buckets and any other uses. Use your own measured consumption where possible. Include ice taken before guests arrive; setup demand can empty part of the bin before the main service begins.
Then ask the supplier for production figures under your expected room and incoming-water temperatures. A published pounds-per-day rating isn’t an instant refill rate. The ice machine sizing guide explains the broader production calculation; the bin calculation answers a different question.

How do I estimate the storage needed between events?
As a planning exercise, subtract the ice reasonably expected to be produced during each service period from that period’s expected withdrawals. Carry the remaining stored ice forward to the next period. Allow for melt, setup use and an agreed operating reserve. Have the equipment supplier check the assumptions before you select a bin.
For example, if a service window needs 200 pounds and you expect 60 pounds of production during that window, at least 140 pounds must come from storage before any reserve or losses. These are illustrative figures, not a recommendation for a particular venue.
Check usable storage and physical fit
Ask how the advertised bin capacity is measured and whether your chosen ice type changes the practical amount stored. Confirm the head-and-bin combination is approved, including any required adapter. A larger bin won’t increase the ice machine’s production.
Compare Hoshizaki ice machines and Manitowoc ice machines using compatible configurations rather than mixing a head price from one proposal with a bin price from another. Leave room for loading, cleaning and service access.
Will a bigger bin fix an undersized ice machine?
Only if the machine has enough quiet time to refill it before the next peak. If total daily demand exceeds realistic daily production, more storage simply delays the shortage. Your commercial ice equipment brief should include both the daily total and the busiest overlapping periods.
Send your event timetable and measured demand when you compare commercial ice machine pricing. Ask for the production-and-storage calculation with the quote, not just a bigger bin.
